Colleges will give you every excuse in the book why you don’t need this. But, no matter how they put it – you want to be supported when you need the help – not when it suits them.

As long as you look hard, you will find the top providers which offer direct-access support all the time – no matter what time of day it is.

Never make the mistake of compromise where support is concerned. The majority of would-be IT professionals that throw in the towel, just need the right support system.

You have to make sure that all your accreditations are what employers want – don’t bother with studies that only give in-house certificates.

All the major commercial players such as Microsoft, CompTIA, Adobe or Cisco each have widely acknowledged skills courses. These heavyweights will make sure you’re employable.

Beginning with the understanding that it’s necessary to locate the employment that excites us first, before we’re able to ponder which development program fulfils our needs, how can we choose the right direction?

Because with no commercial skills in computing, how should we possibly be expected to understand what anyone doing a particular job actually does?

* Surely, all of us at some time have avoided asking a question, because we didn’t want to look stupid?

* If you occasionally work away from home, you have the added problem that events sometimes become difficult to get to – and yet, the fees were paid along with everything else at the start.

Why not watch on-screen and study with industry specialists one-to-one through videoed lessons, taking them when it’s convenient for you, not someone else.

Study can happen anywhere that suits. If you own a laptop, why not take in a little fresh air outside while you study. If any problem raises its head then utilise the 24×7 Support.

If searching for training tracks certified by Microsoft, then you’ll naturally expect companies to offer a wide selection of some of the top learning programmes to be had.

Perhaps you’d like to find a training advisor, who can offer guidance on what sort of job would suit you, and the kind of tasks that are appropriate for somebody with your personality.

Be assured that your training course is put together to your current level of knowledge and ability. The best companies will make sure that your training program is appropriate for the career you want to get into.

How the program is actually delivered to you is usually ignored by most students. How is the courseware broken down? And in what sequence and at what speed is it delivered?

You may think it logical (with most training taking 1-3 years to gain full certified status,) for your typical trainer to courier the training stage by stage, as you achieve each exam pass. However:

Maybe the order of study insisted on by the company won’t suit you. And what if you don’t finish all the sections at the speed required?

For future safety and flexibility, it’s normal for most trainees to insist that all study materials are sent immediately, and not in a piecemeal fashion. It’s then up to you how fast or slow and in what order you’d like to work.

* Do you hope to realise a specific aspiration – for instance, becoming self-employed as quickly as possible?

* Is the money you make further up on your priority-list than anything else.

* You need to appreciate the differences between the myriad of training options.

For the majority of us, considering all these ideas will require meeting with an advisor that has direct industry experience. And not just the accreditations – but the commercial requirements and expectations of industry too.

Most trainers typically provide mainly work-books and reference manuals. This can be very boring and not ideal for achieving retention.

We see a huge improvement in memory retention when multiple senses are involved – this has been an accepted fact in expert circles for years now.

Top of the range study programs now offer self-contained CD or DVD materials. Instructor-led tutorials will mean you’ll learn your subject by way of their teaching and demonstrations. You can then test yourself by practicing and interacting with the software.

You really need to look at courseware examples from any company that you may want to train through. They have to utilise full motion videos of instructors demonstrating the topic with lab’s to practice the skills in.

Go for actual CD or DVD ROM’s whenever you can. This then avoids all the potential pitfalls with broadband ‘downtime’ or slow-speeds.
