How to Choose the Right Shoulder Brace & Why You Should Use Them

Jash Pal | January 27, 2010

Shoulder pain can have many different causes. You could hurt your shoulder playing sports like swimming, baseball, and tennis. Your shoulders can also hurt due to everyday wear and tear from things like gardening or house cleaning.

What are shoulder injuries? Shoulder injuries can occur when tendons, muscles or ligaments in your shoulder get damaged. Seperation, dislocator and rotator cuff injuries are the most common types of shoulder injuries.

Fractured or broken bones can also cause shoulder pain. The pain may come from a fractured collarbone or upper arm bone.

Why should you use shoulder braces? Shoulder braces can help if you have shoulder pain. The type of brace you choose will depend on the nature of your injury.

Some braces support the clavicle (collarbone) and shoulder area. These braces help to keep the collarbone and shoulder area in place.

These braces allow you to move normally while keeping the bones and muscles in the correct position. This helps with the healing process. These braces are often used after a shoulder injury.

Other shoulder braces called shoulder immobilizers work to keep the shoulder from moving at all. If you have had surgery or a major injury you may need this type of brace.

How do you choose a shoulder brace? When you are choosing a brace, ensure you choose the right brace level. Shoulder braces come in levels one through to four. I’ll explain how you know which level you need.

A level 1 brace will give you basic protection. A level 4 brace will give you the highest level of protection.

You may need a level 4 brace when your injury requires more support. This type of brace is also more comfortable than a level 1 as it can be adjusted in many ways. A level 1 brace is more suited to an injury that requires less support.

Neoprene and elastic is a common brace material as it is flexible and comfortable. The higher level shoulder braces may also be made from carbon fiber and metal.

Benefits of a Wrist Brace for Common Wrist Injuries & Conditions

Jash Pal | January 27, 2010

A wrist injury or fracture can be very painful. Along with pain you may also experience swelling, warmth, limited ability to move the wrist, and discoloration.

The most common way you can hurt your wrist is by falling on it. If you fall with your hand outstretched you may sprain or strain the muscles or ligaments in your wrist. If you fall hard enough you may break or crack one of the bones in your wrist.

Common wrist conditions include;

Tendonitis is the inflammation or swelling of a tendon. This causes pain in the affected area. Tendonitis can occur by overusing the tendon and repeated motions or, injuring the tendon whilst playing a sport.

If you feel numbness, tingling and muscle weakness in your wrist, you may have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This can also occur from repetitive motion.

What can you do if you have a wrist injury or one of these conditions? You may want to consider using a wrist brace. Wrist braces can be used for a number of wrist injuries and conditions.

The brace can help keep your wrist stable. This helps to relieve the pain and also allows the injury to heal. As wrist braces keep the wrist stable, the damaged muscles, bones, ligaments or tendons can begin to heal.

Using a brace will help you keep from further hurting your wrist as well. Also, if you have recently had a cast removed you might want to use a brace to keep the wrist stable while it heals. Wrist braces can also help improve the function of the joints in your wrist.

Will a wrist brace be uncomfortable to wear? Not at all. Most wrist braces are made with materials or liners that are easy to use and comfortable to wear. Wrist braces are contoured to fit the wrist and hand. Some wrist braces are made of breathable canvas, some are made of lightweight fabric, and others are made of high quality elastic.

The brace you choose will depend on the level of support and comfort you require as well the type of wrist injury or condition you have.
