Transformation Chiropractic-Your Health Article #2 Feet

Dr. Shaun Stuto | January 27, 2010

As a health and wellness clinic, Transformation Chiropractic Missoula MT works with patients on their overall wellness. Wellness is scalable to the individual and every patient starts somewhere. Pain patients make up a modest percentage of the patient population. There are many health problems that result in pain in different parts of the body. And there are so many causes for them. Challenges like back pain and headaches,as you will learn in this article, may be occurring from an often overlooked part of the body, the feet.

The human foot is a complex device, with a combination of bones and joints. Its design is customized to fit the individual that it is attached to. It is a very complex combination of bones, muscles and tendons. It allows us people to walk upright and it is the main load bearing component of our body while walking or even just standing up.

With all the weight it has to bear, it is continually stressed by impacts to the ground and our own body weight. Even as we just walk, the foot has to take shocks every time it touches the ground. While the foot is designed to cope with these kinds of stress, its cushioning capabilities diminish when we age or if the foot is slightly injured. The muscles and tendons that limit the shocks lose their ability to do so, thus those shocks affect other body parts further up the body, like the ankle, knee, spinal column, and all the way to the head.

The commmon recipients of these shocks are your ankles, and knees. But it doesn’t stop there. They can also rise up to your pelvis, back, neck and beyond. Since the body functions as a kinematic chain where everything affects each other, foot problems could be the cause of your headaches and even TMJ problems.

Foot problems often contribute to back pain, especially the lumbar spine. A common foot problem that causes this is flat feet. With flat feet, your foot absorbs abnormal pressure where it was simply not designed. And if you walk continuously in that situation, the pain taken from your foot may make it to your spine and cause misalignments or “subluxations”, hence the pain. On the other hand, having a high-arched and rigid foot can also cause problems in your back and neck. This is due to the foot not having enough cushion to counter the transient or “normal” forces of walking and running.

With this newly acquired knowledge, caring for your feet should be a high priority. Part of that care is visiting your chiropractor and having your feet checked. Problems in the feet are not necessarily painful. Subluxations are much like cavities, by the time they hurt, the damage has already been done.

You should take the proactive action of seeing your chiropractor to ensure undetected and asymptomatic foot subluxations are not present. Transformation Chiropractic from Missoula MT can help you with getting to the root cause of problems like back pain, neck pain, foot problems, and headaches. More importantly, they will help you move beyond your aches and pains into a newer realm of thriving health and wellness. They utilize techniques like Applied Kinesiology and Neuro-Emotional Technique to customize a treatment plan specific to the patient instead of fitting a patient into their treatment plan.

True health and optimal wellness is the goal Transformation Chiropractic Missoula MT has for you. It is up to you to step up, take action and achieve it. They believe that true health is actually a decision and more than a matter of circumstances, luck or “good” genes.

Transformation Chiropractic Missoula MT: Shaping YOUR Total Health

Dr. Shaun Stuto | January 25, 2010

Transformation Chiropractic Missoula MT is run by its owner, Dr. Shaun Stuto who recieved his Chiropractic training at the Southern California University of Health Sciences.

Dr. Stuto’s approach to overall health and wellness is a holistic one, based on the understanding that the body is a self-regulating, self-healing organism that is intelligent enough to repair itself when given the proper natural care and attention that it deserves.

Something that is key to the work that Dr. Stuto does is the education he gives his patients on how emotional health can manifest as a physical condition. He firmly believes that focusing on just the pain will be doing the patient a disservice. The pain should be viewed as a warning that specific factors in the body’s overall system needs to be addressed. This kind of time, attention and whole body/life approach is something that is quite a departure from the healthcare practices that are normally found in Missoula or elsewhere in Montana.

The basis of Dr. Stuto’s work comes from the principles of Applied Kinesiology, which takes a much more integrated look at how the body’s systems work together to create overall health. He also relies on Neuro Emotional Techniques to help understand and correct the physiologic effects created by emotional experiences whether identified or not.

It’s a refreshing way of looking at health when compared to the super-busy, overworked private practices of many physicians. The problem is that the sheer volume of patients that come and go in the average doctor’s office often prevents them from spending the kind of time and attention that patients want and may very well need to accurately diagnose the cause.

Dr. Stuto’s approach is refreshing in that he believes it is essential to spend the time getting to the root cause of an ailment and not just treating symptoms. Any bone head can put band-aids on a boo. Dr. Stuto wants to know why the boo boo is there in the first place.

In order for his patients to fully embrace the holistic approach that Transformation Chiropractic espouses, Dr. Stuto considers it his duty to request that patients take an active role in their own healing. He helps them to uncover, understand and take ownership of the things that occur in their lives, whether good or bad. When you start to take ownership of everything that happens to you, your beliefs about where health comes from will change. You will now understand that thriving health and wellness comes from the inside out.

Transformation Chiropractic patients are serious about their health and they share the belief that the body, when properly fed and cared for, can regenerate and renew itself to a healthy state through an innate intelligence. Patients at Transformation Chiropractic are avid exercisers, healthy eaters and spend a lot of time working on personal development. They understand they are in control of the 2500 words per minute running through their heads that dictates who they are and what they can do. Optimal health habits such as these consciously practiced by patients at Transformation Chiropractic. There is even an online community to support one another for continued growth.

Dr. Stuto sees healthcare as an ongoing journey and becoming a patient at Transformation Chiropractic as a proactive measure of true preventative health care and overall wellness. The wellness journey is just that, a journey. Chiropractic care is a crucial part of the life-long practice of preventative health in which you only receive the value and long-term benefits as long as you choose to take action and participate.

Chiropractor Missoula-The Road to Wellness: Your Health Article #1-Sleep

Dr. Shaun Stuto | January 11, 2010

Welcome to the first installment of “Your Health.” Please reference our video series on Youtube and also on our website Transformation Chiropractic Missoula, Montana Dr. Shaun Stuto is a Missoula Chiropractor, author, speaker, and the owner/founder of Transformation Chiropractic. The goal of “Your Health” is to explore and dissect many of the different aspects that encompass wellness. “Wellness” is a buzzword that we hear alot on T.V. and in other media. The big question is who is defining what wellness is? The concept of “wellness” is the polar opposite of disease and death. Wellness is at the far end of the spectrum of health and is not necessarily a destination. The concept and goal of wellness is in the journey of achieving it. Think of “wellness” as the point between “excellence” and “perfection.” Excellent health includes many factors such as a balanced lifestyle, low blood pressure, good height:weight ratio low mental stress, healthy diet and an active lifestyle to name a few. The point where excellent health actually becomes perfect cannot be precisely distinguished.

The first aspect of wellness we will explore is sleep. While the nervous system and a well adjusted spine are the single most important aspect of wellness, sleep and nutrition are a tie for second. An optimal functioning nervous system free of disturbance is only made possible through a well adjusted spine. The spine protects the nervous system which is the master controller of the body. As a person becomes stressed physically, chemically or emotionally, this can lead to disturbances in the nervous system that only a chiropractor can detect and correct.

Sleep deprivation can have a deleterious effect to your overall health. The sleep deprived person is often irritable, stressed, chronically tired and quite often a “people pleaser.” This is the type of person that feels they need to be the perfect spouse, child, parent, worker, friend etc…Not surprisingly, this type of person eventually burns out. They simply cannot maintain this lifestyle. Quite commonly they develop inexplicable symptoms that they do not attribute to a traumatic event. The most common are aches and pains of the neck and lower back. This person might commonly say “I must have slept wrong.” How do you “sleep wrong?” What is actually going on is their body is fighting back. The body possesses an innate intelligence built to protect. These unexplained pains are the bodies defense mechanism which will force the person to slow down and rest.

How much sleep is enough? The average person needs between 7-9 hours of sleep on average. If you need less than 6 hours see a doctor. If you need more than 9 hours see a psychologist. There could be underlying issues of depression and emotional stress contributing to your need for escape from reality.

The most important aspect of sleep is your comfort. You must be comfortable in order to maximize your recovery time. With the high stress, high paced lives most of us lead, it is crucial to maximize our time at rest. “Invest in your rest!” I coined the phrase and you should take it to heart. Invest in your rest means spend the money on the highest quality bed you can afford. Most people do best on a firmer mattress.

For Dr. Shaun Stuto, the Sleep Number bed is the best choice. We spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed. Shouldn’t we ensure that we get the highest quality rest? Of course! The beauty of the Sleep Number bed is that the firmness is independently adjustable from side to side. This is the answer for couples with different mattress preference. Now one person isn’t left to toss and turn. Both parties can benefit from sleeping on their customized mattress firmness. How many households spend $1000′s on a fancy couch and flat screen T.V. but want to get away with a $300 bed. It just doesn’t add up. How old is your bed? Where did you get it? If you don’t even have answers to these questions, don’t read another line. Go buy the bed now! Invest in YOUR rest!

You now have a much better understanding of the essentials of effective sleep. So long as you get 7-9 hours on a high quality bed, you should do great. On the contrary, a sleep deficiency can manifest as physical pain, poor health and even emotional stress. This emotional stress can even lead to sugar cravings and actually make you fat! Yes poor sleep can absolutely make you fat. The answer to more energy and less weight is the quality of your bed.

Place your health and wellness on the top of your priority list starting today. You deserve it. Commit to regular chiropractic care and ensure the optimal function of your nervous system. Implement a healthy eating plan and exercise routine. Finally, get your sleep. Shoot for 7-9 hours of sleep on the highest quality bed you can afford.

I am Dr. Shaun Stuto. This is “Your Health.” I wish you a life of abundant health!
