A Breakdown Of HEPA Air Purifiers And What They Can Do For Your Abode And Household

Angela Frazie | January 28, 2010

Lately is seems like you can’t get away from the term HEPA. You can find HEPA filter air purifiers, as well as HEPA filters for vacuum cleaners and air conditioning units just by going to any local hardware or department store. None of that labeling explains what HEPA actually is, though. We’ll examine HEPA air purifiers to get a grasp of what, exactly, HEPA is and means.

Why HEPA And Not Hepa?

HEPA is written in caps because it’s an acronym, like DARE or MADD. The acronym stands for “high efficiency particulate absorbing”. Or, alternately, it could mean “high efficiency particulate arrestance”, which is basically the same thing. In everyday English, HEPA air purifiers either stop or absorb particles of matter that are way too small for the human eye to detect.

How Do Humans Benefit From HEPA Air Purifiers?

Although HEPA air purifiers do clean pollen and dust out of the air, there are many more particles that are not natural to our environment, and that our human respiratory systems do not deal well with. Sometimes we can detect these other particles in the form of allergens and odors, sometimes we can’t. Unfortunately, there are many pollutants that our bodies simply don’t recognize and don’t defend against, which leaves them to damage our lungs and other inner parts. Having a device that can either stop or absorb these dangerous particulates can definitely have a positive impact on one’s health.

Are HEPA Air Purifiers Special Compared To Others?

Not every air purifier is the same. The standard for air purification is generally accepted to be the HEPA standard. This comes from HEPA air purifiers being the most effective air filtration available for so many years. HEPA filter air purifiers are so incredibly good at their job because they are capable of stopping 0.3 micron air particles. There is a point to focusing on that particular size of particle. When it comes to our respiratory systems, particles that are 0.3 micrometers in diameter are both dangerous and difficult to stop or filter.

What’s The Difference Between A HEPA-Type And A HEPA Air Purifier?

HEPA standards ensure that every true HEPA air purifier is up to par. To pass, they must be capable of stopping 99.7% of all 0.3 micron particles. There is a lot of science behind this, and the buyer can expect a price tag that reflects this. HEPA air purifiers are generally not cheap. You can also purchase HEPA-type air purifiers, generally right along side the true ones. These cheaper purifiers are not held to any standards at all. If you purchase a HEPA-type air purifier, you could easily get nothing but a highly ineffective fan. Don’t put too much stock in HEPA air purifier reviews, either. The vast majority of things that we can smell are not 0.3 micron particles, which means our noses have no way to know which is the best HEPA air purifier.

Defining Espresso Coffee Cups

Wenona Crudd | January 28, 2010

Espresso coffee cups are only sort of coffee cups. They’re like a shot glass version of a coffee cup, which does make sense as they are not supposed to be used with coffee, but rather with espresso. Yes, they certainly look like little bitty coffee cups, but it’d be rather frustrating trying to get a caffeine buzz from a cup that was so tiny. After all, the purpose of coffee for most people is to get energized quickly, without sleeping.

Differences Between Espresso Coffee Cups And Other Coffee Cups

Espresso coffee cups come in much smaller sizes than a regular coffee cup. There is not, however, any exact standard for the sizes of espresso coffee cups. Often, the only thing separating espresso coffee cups from cappuccino, latte, and every other coffee cup type thing is the manufacturer’s designations. Every single one of these types of cups have little saucers that match the cups.

Why Espresso Coffee Cups Are So Tiny

The reason that espresso coffee cups are so very small in comparison to normal coffee cups is because the espresso that they are intended to hold is a lot stronger than normal coffee. As a matter of fact, espresso generally has about three times as much caffeine as normal coffee. Since how much caffeine is in any cup of coffee is highly dependent on the bean and the manner of grinding, this is just an estimate. If you try various brands and coffee blends, including espresso, you’re sure to get different results from each one.

What Is Espresso?

Espresso is not actually a type of blend or bean, but a method of preparation. Density is the biggest difference between regular coffee and espresso. This incredibly dense and strong coffee comes from forcing pressurized water through fine coffee grounds. Once you see the stuff, which has the consistency of a thin syrup, you understand why most people would not want an entire standard coffee cup of espresso at once.

Can One Cup Coffee Makers Make Espresso?

Although there are some facsimiles, one cup coffee makers can’t really make true espresso. Espresso requires a lot of water pressure, and a one cup coffee maker isn’t really designed for that. An espresso coffee pod will generally fit just fine, it just won’t come out quite right. With K-Cups coffee, you can purchase blends that are labeled as espresso and are stronger than most. Although these solutions will produce stronger coffee, they’re not really worth getting the espresso coffee cups out since you’ll probably still want a regular coffee cup worth of the stuff. ESE coffee pods, ironically, usually don’t work all that well with 1 cup coffee makers, preferring espresso machines with adapters instead.

Doing Your Part For The Planet With Wind Power

Arnold Thompson | January 26, 2010

People are more interested in ever in doing what they can to protect the environment, as well as keeping an eye on their household budgets. It was once the case that people believed that the cost of implementing alternative energy technologies was too high to be a viable option. However, the costs of fossil fuel based energy supplies are on the rise and wind power and other alternatives are becoming more affordable – so a lot of people are considering the possibilities.

The cost of installing a wind generator is a lot less than you may think and it quickly pays for itself by saving you a lot of money on your electricity bill. There are also a variety of incentive programs to encourage people to switch to alternative energies. These programs may allow you to be reimbursed for part of the cost of installing your wind generator.

We’re all interested in preserving our environment, so there are plenty of programs in place to encourage people to start using wind power. You’ll save money over time by installing a wind generator too. You’ll save on energy costs, as well as being able to sell power which you don’t use to your local utility company.

Electricity suppliers are required to buy the extra energy generated by consumers who use wind generators and other alternative energy sources who produce more than they can use. You’ll be doing your part by powering your home with clean energy and by selling the excess to your local utility; you’re also supplying clean renewable energy to other households in your area!

DIY wind power generators

Your neighbors get green energy; you’ll get a little extra money, everyone’s happy. It’s easy to install a wind generator too – there are even instructions available online which show you every step of the installation process, so anyone can do this themselves. If you’re installing your wind generator or generators on your roof, you should be able to produce more than enough electricity to power your home.

What about a back up plan? If you live somewhere where they can be times of very little wind, you can fall back on the utility company. Simply do not disconnect your hook up to the electric company just in case you ever need to fall back on them. This will ensure that you are never left without the electricity you need to run your home in a safe and pleasurable way.

Any time that you’re meeting your energy needs from your wind generators (which will be most of the time), you’re not using the energy produced by your utility company, so you’re doing your part for the environment. The larger the wind turbine you’re using, the more power you’ll be able to generate for your home.

This does not mean that you have to go with the largest that is out there though if that is not something you can afford at this time. Over time, you can add more and more generators, or larger ones, and you will be able to see that you are bringing in much more renewable energy.

See how you can build residential wind turbines for your own house and save cash on your electric bill. Making your own wind power generators may save you hundreds on the cost of buying one at the store as well and still make lots of power.

Determining If A One Cup Coffee Maker Is Appropriate For Your Home Or Office

Oprah Menfree | January 24, 2010

Let’s imagine, or assume, that you have no coffee maker at all. Considering one cup coffee makers are nearly as common as the more traditional brewers, and they’re not even priced all that differently, you would have to make a decision. Does it make more sense to purchase a one cup coffee maker as opposed to a traditional brewer? Consider these points when making your decision.

Coffee In The Office

At first glance, it seems the only real option in the office would be a traditional coffee brewer, possibly an industrial sized one. A one cup coffee maker just seems like it would be overworked. However, if you really think about the way people drink coffee, this might not be the case. Most people arrive with their coffee cup, or a disposable coffee cups, and take whatever is available, but not everyone. If you have an office of picky types, especially a smaller one, than you might actually save money with the ability to make single cups at a time instead of the “stale” coffee getting thrown out constantly. If this sounds like your office, then a one cup coffee maker will probably be your best option.

The Freshness Factor

A traditional brewer will always lose the freshness contest unless you either throw away every partially used bag, or use everything that you open every day. The 1 cup coffee maker, on the other hand, specializes in this exact situation. Coffee pods are wrapped individually, so opening one won’t affect any of the others. They’re vacuum sealed and have long expiration dates, so you can store quite a few of them as well. Unless your office burns through a package of coffee, the whole thing, every day, a one cup coffee maker will always win this one. The freshness advantage is even clearer at home.

Options When You Want Them

Sometimes, even though you don’t feel like driving, and you really shouldn’t spend the money anyway, you really want some sort of specialty coffee. A one cup coffee maker wins the day here, especially K-Cups coffee and T-Discs. With little to no extra effort, you can make whatever specialty coffee you have on hand. If you’re the type that frequents the coffee shop for just this reason, you can look forward to saving a lot of time and money this way. Employees at work can also take advantage of one cup coffee makers without having to go to a special machine three floors up, or drive to a coffee shop.

The Cost Of A One Cup Coffee Maker

Despite what many seem to think, the price one cup coffee makers aren’t all that expensive when compared to a quality traditional brewer. Sure, office version might cost a bit more in the beginning, but there’s savings to be had down the road. The savings may be even more at home since the initial cost isn’t as much, but the savings might be even more. The best way to really know which will work better for you will be to take these points, in addition to your personal situation, and compare the options.

Was The Ionic Breeze Air Purifier Solely A Fabrication That Eventually Destroyed The Sharper Image?

Wilma Perkins | January 21, 2010

Remember all those commercials about the Ionic Breeze air purifier? They also made appearances at Radio Shack and The Sharper Image stores. Then they were gone, along with The Sharper Image, for the most part. Researching the Ionic Breeze air purifier on the net will very quickly yield two facts: the original Ionic Breeze air purifier is nearly impossible to find, and there are a bunch of folks out there that feel The Sharper Image lied about it. Yet, if you look at the reviews from the people that actually bought one, you’ll see that they’re generally favorable. Let’s take a look at some of the claims that eventually killed the original Ionic Breeze air purifiers, and put them into perspective.

It’s Been Said That The Ionic Breeze Air Purifiers Is Not Effective

True, the Ionic Breeze is not as effective as a True HEPA purifier, but no one ever said it was. In fact, The Sharper Image never made direct comparisons with HEPA air purifiers except in terms of maintenance. Consumer Reports says that the Ionic Breeze silent air purifier only cleaned 30% of the pollution that passed through the machine. Consider that all of the air in the room will pass through the machine multiple times. If you clean 30% of something multiple times, you eventually end up close to, though not quite 100%. So, basically, an ionic air purifier is slower than a HEPA machine at the same job. It’s also cheaper to buy, run, and maintain, so it’s a trade-off. Also consider that these comparisons were made against True HEPA air purifiers, not HEPA-type machines. HEPA-type air purifiers don’t have any particular standard to adhere to, and True HEPA machines are extremely expensive.

The Ionic Breeze Actually Makes The Air Unhealthy

The idea is that the ionic air purifier produces a lot of ozone to clean the air of other pollutants. However, this isn’t true. When people say this about ionic air purifiers, they are confusing them with ozone generators, which actually do clean the air in a similar manner. Even Consumer Reports agrees that the Ionic Breeze air purifier has no problem meeting HEPA guidelines for ozone. It’s also worth noting that the Ionic Breeze air purifier actually passed all HEPA guidelines, with the notable exception of efficiency.

Some Say The Ionic Breeze Air Purifier Killed The Sharper Image

The Sharper Image did end up filing for bankruptcy in 2008, but not due to lack of sales. The reason they went under is because The Sharper Image was a publicly traded company, and their reputation had been so badly damaged that the price of their stock plummeted to well under a dollar per share. Even at the time of bankruptcy, the company actually had over $50 million equity, not including liquid cash. They simply couldn’t overcome the bad publicity, regardless of the quality of their products.

Are New Ionic Air Purifiers Any Better?

New ionic air purifiers really aren’t all that much better than the original, but the concept was so simple and effective that it would be really hard to improve upon. The simple fact is that an ionic air purifier will safely, albeit slowly, clean the air just as well as anything else, and cost a lot less doing it. Although the Ionic Breeze itself is nearly impossible to find, the Ionic Pro air purifier, as well as some generics, are readily obtainable.
