Can You Mix Friendship And Learning In Kansas City Dance Lessons?

Pam Green | January 28, 2010

A great place to learn to dance is Kansas City. All sorts of dance styles are taught there, and because social clubs are often part of the studio offerings, you will also make friends in your Kansas City dance lessons.

Some of the popular dance styles available in the city are Latin, Ballroom, Swing, Tango, and Country. Usually a studio will offer a mixture of styles. You should gather with the students after class hours to practice together at real dances in the area. Lots of people enjoy this kind of social outing several times a week.

Group lessons are the most common way to start dancing if you are a beginner. But you can take private lessons too. These are good for the times when you need to have extra coaching. Class times and prices do vary from studio to studio. You should do your research about these to see what works best for you, and then plan to visit the studio before you sign up. You want to see how things are done there before you spend any money.

Beginning classes are a wonderful way to get started learning to dance. Making friends with other beginners is really easy because everyone is having fun learning new skills together. And some of the funniest moments happen when beginners make mistakes together. Everyone will be laughing and joking about it together.

Your age does not matter. Some of the best classes are those with mixed ages. That is because dancing keeps you young, and that energetic dancer next to you might be over 70 years old while you are struggling to keep up. It can be great fun to see a teenager dancing with a grandmother or grandfather.

Two questions should be asked when you first visit a dance studio that catches your eye. Do you enjoy the music? Do you think you are physically fit to learn the dance steps? If both questions can be answered with the word yes, then you should try out the classes and see how things go for you.

Some top-notch studios in the city include TC Dance Club International, which has a 2,400 square foot dance floor and dance social clubs as well. You might also consider West Side Tango Club if you are fascinated by the passionate steps of tango. Amore Dancing is a great place to find Zumba, which is an aerobic exercise system using Latin music and dancing. City in Motion School of Dance offers a wide array of dance workshops including notable styles such as Indian Classical, West African, Hip-Hop, Burlesque, and Flamenco. Bella Studio offers a variety of social dance lessons such as Salsa, Bollywood, and Improvisational Tribal Belly dance in order to improve socializing and communicating through dance. Touch Dancing is the studio for beginning dancers to learn ballroom dancing such as cha cha, merengue, and swing. Walters Dance Center has been teaching social and ballroom dancing for over forty years, with classes available for all ages and levels.

So, if you enjoy music, and are interested in learning to dance, you have a wealth of styles, instructors and Kansas City studios where you can meet to dance, make new friends, and have lots of fun.

Pilates Mat Exercises Are Typically Effective And Challenging

Thaya Kareeson | January 25, 2010

The gift of fitness that is Pilates exercise has been with the fit world for some time. Though many people are only recently getting turned on to Pilates, many others have been doing it for a very long time. Many tools can be used in this fitness practice. However, here are some examples of Pilates mat exercises which may help the beginner get started.

Pilates was first created as a physical fitness method in the early twentieth century in Germany. Even though it has a long history, in 2005 over eleven million people were reportedly doing it on a regular basis. As of that time, there were fourteen thousand instructors for Pilates in just the United States. Most instructors will provide Pilates mat exercises and the mats that they require, right in class.

One of the easier Pilates mat exercises is the inner thigh lift. The mat is used to help the spine line up straight as the exerciser lays on their side, hip to the floor, leg extended towards the foot of the mat. The lower arm can support the head in a hand, or it can stretch out across the floor. The upper leg bends so the foot can be placed before of the hips, flat to the mat as the knee pushes away. The inner thigh is used to lift and lower the leg on the floor, without letting that leg touch the floor.

Pilates mat exercises can help a person articulate the entire spine and move it in a roll from flexion through to extension. The Teaser One maneuver is started on the back and meant to do just that. The arms are above the head and the legs are lifted up to a forty-five degree angle. With the tightening of the abdominal muscles, the spine curls up and the hands float over the legs then lift up above the head as the body comes into a perfect V pose. Then the body lowers back to the mat, with the legs going up above the body in a ninety degree angle.

The ‘walk out and push up’ is also one of the Pilates mat exercises, though it starts with the person standing at the foot of the mat. The arms extend above the head, the spine curls and the hands descend to the floor with the pelvis pushing out. When the hands are on the floor, they ‘walk out’, first the right, then the left, keeping the hips steady. With the hands evenly spaced beneath the chest, the arms push up the body. The crown and spine and legs align, and then the elbows bend an inch, then straighten, doing the ‘push up’.

Pilates mat exercises include many varieties of push-ups. The important thing is to find the one that suits you best. The Leg Pull Front Support is started face down on the mat with the palms at the sides of the body, near the shoulders. The legs extend back towards the foot of the mat, and the knees are lifted so they aren’t resting on the ground. The purpose of this exercise is to focus on alignment of the spine, from crown to heels, ‘head to heels as if like steel’. With the abdominal muscles tightened, the ribs are pulled into the spine and the position is held for several seconds.

Pilates mat exercises should be done with a genuine Pilates mat, not a yoga mat. Yoga mats are thinner because they intend for yoga practitioners to feel the floor. For Pilates, exercisers need to be padded from the floor, so the mats should be half an inch thick and made of good quality foam. Pilates mats can be rolled up or folded. They should also be about four feet by eight feet in size.

Pilates mat exercises can be a very practical method that can be used by people of many different physical abilities. There are exercises for people who have injuries, as well as those who aren’t as flexible or agile yet. Doing Pilates mat exercises is a safe way to get fit, become stronger and increase flexibility.

Learn Tips For Doing Fun And Easy Poses: Yoga For Beginners

Thaya Kareeson | January 14, 2010

Yoga is well-known to improve health, relieve stress, improve coordination, balance and overall fitness, both mental and physical. Yoga, if you know nothing about it, can be intimidating. You have visions of turning yourself into a human pretzel – you who has not done anything remotely pretzel-like since you were five years old! Put your mind at rest. In yoga for beginners there is no need for you to do any pose beyond your ability. Here are a few beginner’s poses to get you started.

Easy Yoga Pose, also known as sukasana, is very basic pose often used for meditation. To do this post, sit on your bottom cross legged. Bring one heel up towards your groin. The other foot is left on the floor. Sit up as tall as you can. Imagine a thread connecting the crown of your head to the ceiling. Elongate your spine and lower your shoulders.

Vrksasana is known in English as the Tree Pose. The Tree Pose is started from a standing position with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Your hands should be in prayer position with your fingertips pointing upward. Keeping your pelvis level, bring your right foot and leg up the inside of your left leg, stopping when you get to the inside of your thigh (or until you cannot go any higher without pain). Balance. Repeat the pose with your other leg starting from the beginning position.

Downward-Facing Dog, also known as adho mukha svanasana is a great whole-body stretch. To do this pose, get down on your hands and knees. Your hands should be straight below your shoulders and your hips directly over your knees. Your back should be straight. Slowly bring your hands as far back as you can. Your body will look like the top part of a triangle with the floor as the base of the triangle. Lower your shoulders so they are not scrunched up towards your ears. Then, drop your head and just let it hang. Only go as far as you can with this pose without experiencing pain. Finish the pose by coming back to the starting position.

Child’s Pose is done from the Downward-Facing Dog Pose, spread your knees and then bring your stomach towards the ground. Stretch your arms out in front of you. Of, if that is uncomfortable, put your arms down alongside of your body with your fingers pointing at your toes. Stay in this position for as long as you like.

Cat/Cow Pose is another stretching pose. Get onto your hands and knees as if you were going to do the Downward-Facing Dog Pose. Your toes should be bent under and pointing towards your head. Shoulders should be relaxed. Drop your belly low towards the ground. It is not necessary to touch your belly to the ground. Keep your hands and knees aligned with your shoulders and hips. Next, arch your back towards the ceiling getting a good stretch. Come back to the beginning.

From a standing position with your hands in prayer position and your feet apart, go slowly into a squatting position. Your elbows will be at the inside of your knees slightly pressing outward. Keep your shoulders relaxed. Spine should be straight, no hunching. Remain like this for five breaths.

You have just gone through five different poses of yoga for beginners. No doubt, you feel stretched out and relaxed. Continue practicing yoga poses every day and you will see yourself getting more flexible and stronger over time. You may even decide to join other yoga practitioners at a local yoga class.

In search of ways how to lose weight as well as how to lose belly fat. Yoga is popular means to increase health, relieve anxiety, increase coordination, balance as well as overall fitness, both mental as well as physical.

How Ballroom Dancing Changes People’s Lives

Melanie LaPatin | January 11, 2010

In the 30 years that I have been in the ballroom dance business I have never seen another occupation that I can think of that does so much for a human being. It can transform lives, mentally spiritually physically and emotionally.

Mentally – Dancing is a challenge and a goal that can be reached. It gets into your psyche, and drives you to be the best you can be. It helps you forget about all the problems you are having during the day as you are lost in the moment.

Physically – You don’t realize that you are exercising, it is a sensual workout. You have great music, a great partner, it releases stress. You are so into the music that you think about nothing else when you are on the dance floor. You don’t feel the physical strain only the pleasure. When you take dance position, your body begins to align itself into correct posture. Dancing is a great aerobic workout for both the young and old as it can be tailored to your physical abilities.

Emotional – Dancing releases endorphins and endorphins are the body’s wonder drug. After dancing you feel like you had a good workout without having to lift heavy machinery. If you want to change the mood you are in charge, just change the music. It erases the day to day worries.

Spiritual – Dancing is good for the soul. It gives you a sense of spiritual freedom. It is a universal language; it gives a sense of self in moments. Especially with partner dancing, it is a way for you to really connect with another human being.

When you see people are a dance floor they are smiling, the enthusiasm is contagious. It has intoxicating intrigue. It’s never too late to learn to ballroom dance.

So give ballroom or even any other type of dancing a try and see how it improves your well being on so many different levels.

How to Choose a Livermore Dance School

Elijah M. Haas | January 10, 2010

If you are looking for the right Livermore dance school for your child, here’s a few suggestions to follow. Finding the right dance studio is like finding the right glove – it’s got to be a perfect fit. Much time and attention will be given by the dance instruction (and owners for that matter) in developing a child from amateur to professional show performer or competitive athlete. Dance is increasing in popularity among children, especially with the many reality based TV shows that continue to star high profile celebrities in dance competitions.

Tap, jazz and ballet are just a few of the styles of dance taught by most local Livermore dance school in the area. Children often go through many different kinds of activities they want in a lifetime. And this can have your head spinning. If your child is looking to do dance classes, here are some pointers to take into consideration when making a dance school selection. Find out how much one on one time your child will get from the dance instructor (or if the instructor is the owner as well). How big are the classes and how often are the classes held? Once or twice a week probably is not going to cut it if you want to seriously grow your child into a professional dancer.

When it comes to finding the right Livermore dance studio, ask about free or low rate classes – kind of like a starter package. You should be given the opportunity to start the dance class without feeling worried about being pitched a hard sale at the end of the class. Some dance schools charge monthly and others will charge for an entire year paid up front and other creative payment arrangements. Be sure to ask about what kind of payment arrangements the dance school has to offer as well in case you may be on a fairly fixed budget.

As you interview several dance instructors or schools, look to see if they have any kind of accreditation or certification. Any breathing person can call themselves something, but how credible are they? The knowledge and resources the teachers and instructors pull from should be easily transferable to another school in case you ever had to change or move for whatever reasons.

Let’s throw out a few more thoughts to consider while searching for that Livermore dance classes. Will the school offer free parking? Do you need to walk a million miles before getting to the dance studio or can you access the studio fairly easily? Will the school offer the basics on the inside of its four walls: a changing room or a locker to securely store stuff? And one final thought – are the dance instructors first aid certified? Does someone in the school building know first aid? In case something happens you’ll want to be rest assured that your child can be treated safely and quickly in an instant in case an injury were to occur.

Any dance instructor giving their time on such a personal and intimate level should be able to have passion shine through them on a natural level. The dance instructor will connect emotionally with you such dance is such an individualistic activity and very involving. Your teacher can help you through your frustrations when not being able to master a step quickly enough. Your Livermore dance team will help you and serve as an emotional support network as well. You’ll be surrounded by a team of experts of people who have all had the same or similar feelings as well. Your dance instructor is going to help you develop a basic understanding of the fundamental principles before moving on to the next level. This is only critical for your success or your child’s success in going from amateur to star performer.
